Intelligent sensors require hard real-time software
that reliably responds to system events within a tightly specified time
window. Not meeting this requirement can result in erratic operation
or unexpected system failure.
Systems that need hard real-time performance usually employ deeply
embedded processors and are often severely
resource-constrained. To work properly, these embedded systems
must be real-time by design™.
Developing software that operates reliably in such demanding environments
requires specialized knowledge beyond that required for
the creation of ordinary desktop applications. Not only must designers be
proficient coders, they also need a solid
electronics design background in order to correctly utilize the
hardware platform upon which the system is based.
